Welcome to Block Island, where the hills are rolling, the Mohegan Bluffs are towering, and the golf clubs are … no longer!
Historically, during the Victorian “Golden Age,” the island actually boasted the Vaill Cottages Golf Course, a scenic layout that catered to summer socialites. This course was located on the southern end of the island, stretching across the elevated terrain atop the southerly Bluffs, near the present-day Snake Hole Road. It offered players dramatic views of the Atlantic and awesome ways tolose balls. As the tourist economy shifted in the mid-1900s, the course took its course and eventually closed. The land was reclaimed by real estate, private homes and later moved into conservation.
Today, instead of walking remarkable fairways golfers can hike the Greenway — more than 30 miles of various hiking trails — and get birdie sightings at the National Wildlife Refuge!
