Bikes: Bikes are sensible, fun transportation on Block Island. Almost any location can be reached in less than 20 minutes, which may be why as many as 1,000 bikes are rented on busy summer days.
The topography of the island is characterized by small hills, some surprisingly steep. In addition to the hills, ocean breezes will sometimes test your endurance. But, remember, it’s always downhill, or downwind, on the way back (if you start in the right direction!).
Don’t fret about directions. No matter which way you go, you will eventually end up back in town. (A map with all the information you need is printed in the center pages of this guidebook.)
Mopeds: Moped use took off in the 1980s, when there were over 300 available for rent. As accidents increased, the town acted by limiting the number of mopeds that could be rented. Safety measures, like helmet and eye protection, and newer and safer mopeds, have significantly reduced the number of accidents. A driver’s license is required to rent a moped. Mopeds are not allowed past dusk, or on any dirt roads.
Cars: Rental cars are available at a few locations (see the business descriptions below). On summer days, all of the available rental cars are oftentimes taken; so phone ahead to reserve a vehicle.
Block Island Bike & Car Rental
Located in the Hog Pen area of New Harbor, this company offers cars and vans year-round. They own their cars, so they can afford to charge less. Now also offering Jeep-type Trackers. You’ll find low rates on bike rentals, too. For car rentals in summer, reservations are recommended. Arriving at the airport? Look for B.I.
