Block Island Parasail & Water Sports, at the Old Harbor dock 401/864-2474, offers snorkeling and diving trips aboard a spacioius hard-bottom inflatable with a large sun canopy.
Kayaking
Touring New Harbor by kayak is one of the best ways to get a feel for Block Island’s inland waterways. The island’s tidal shoreline was created when a channel was cut into a sandy breachway to make a “New Harbor” in Great Salt Pond. The result is a large, delightful waterway ideal for casual kayaking–a great Block Island family activity. Guided kayak trips, timed with the tides, offered by Pond and Beyond (401/742-5460; 466-5467). Aldo’s Boat Rentals is located at Champlin's Marina (401/466-5811).
Parasailing
Block Island Parasail & Water Sports has since 1989 offered a variety of fun-filled entertainment for the entire family. Soar above Block Island taking in the most breathtaking views imaginable. Five-passenger, 175-hp jet boats are available for rent in the designated riding area. A ride aboard the 10-passenger tow-along banana boat is a great way to beat the heat. All reservations taken in person, on the Old Harbor dock, next to Ballard’s restaurant.(401/864-2474)
A Place to Think …
Island Free Library. Block Island’s public library, on Dodge Street behind the National Hotel, was expanded in 2001 and now offers comfortable reading and work spaces, meeting rooms, and computer access for young and old. The facilities are open to the public, but visitors wanting to borrow from the collection of 30,000 books, CDs, tapes and more must purchase a temporary library card. “Story Time” is held each week for children. The hours vary with the seasons (check the “Tricky Times” in the Block Island Times, Page 2).
